Future of Tradition* would like to invite you to attend a talk with Artist Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi: “A Contemporary Approach to Vietnamese Lacquer Painting”. Lacquer is a traditional medium in Vietnamese art, used primarily on paintings. With Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi, Vietnamese lacquer has been her core element in her contemporary practice.

Without using Son ta (traditional Vietnamese lacquer) on paintings in a traditional way, Oanh Phi Phi made a “swim upstream with traditional techniques” and “bring new life to lacquer by experimenting” such as using lacquer on glass, using lacquer as a material in architecture … With Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi, Son ta is no longer “a fastidious and conservative material”, it is also a close bond between the Artist and Vietnamese culture.

“Today, there is a lot of material for an artist to choose, but to work with lacquer – a material that takes a lot of time and energy – requires a deep desire to be released with affections of the surrounding environment.” (Shared by Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi).
Why did Artist Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi choose to adventure with materials that need so much “time and energy”? What is the relationship between lacquer and Vietnamese culture in her assessment? We would like to invite you to come and discuss to know more about Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi’s practice, as well as Vietnamese lacquer, a special traditional art material.

* “Future of Tradition” is a 4-month project to raise the topic about the traditional art and the application of traditional art in contemporary art practices. The project will be implemented with a series of intensive talks with artists/artisans from traditional fields such as Tuong theater, Cheo theater, Cai Luong theater and contemporary artists who have been practicing with traditional materials such as Nguyen Trinh Thi, Tran Kim Ngoc, Nguyen Oanh Phi Phi, Nguyen Huy An, Nguyen Duc Phuong, Tran Luong, from the beginning of April 2019 to June 2019.
