CONTEMPORARY RESEARCH MUSIC WORKSHOPS: CLIMATE OF SOUND

CONTEMPORARY RESEARCH MUSIC WORKSHOPS: CLIMATE OF SOUND

19 – 28 April 2023

OPEN CALL

DomDom and Goldsmiths, University of London, in collaboration with the Vietnam National Academy of Music, invite Vietnamese music researchers to apply for the Contemporary Music Research Workshop, which will take place over 10 days in Hanoi, Vietnam. The program is initiated and organized by DomDom and funded by the British Council Vietnam through the UK/Viet Nam Season 2023 Collaboration Grant.

Application deadline: 12 April 2023

Selected candidates will be notified on: 15 April 2023

INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

DomDom, a small and tenacious engine, has nurtured two generations of contemporary and experimental musicians over the past 10 years, creating numerous “playgrounds” for knowledge exchange, community development, and international exchanges through small activities such as monthly performances, workshops, artist talks, presentations, and large-scale events such as the Hanoi New Music Festival.

This time, DomDom collaborates with the music department of Goldsmiths, University of London, with the support of the Vietnam National Academy of Music, to open a 10-day experimental contemporary music research workshop in Hanoi, aimed at stimulating the interest of the community of music researchers and creating a premise for effective research on contemporary and experimental music in Vietnam in the future. The latest is the international conference program within the framework of the Hanoi New Music Festival in December 2023.

The research workshop includes knowledge and information exchange activities: a series of presentations by researchers and experimental contemporary music practice in the UK and Vietnam provide participants with an overview of contemporary experimental music in Vietnam and the West, as well as current trends in ethnomusicological research worldwide. The program also includes presentations and practical sessions on ethnomusicological film-making – a new and effective way of ethnomusicological research – and a screening of the most important ethnomusicological films in world history. Additionally, the program includes an experimental music concert in Hanoi and field trips… The training sessions to enhance practical research and documentary filmmaking skills in ethnomusicology, under the guidance of Professor Barley Norton from Goldsmiths University, also play an important role in the activities of the “Research Workshop” to support researchers participating in the workshop to carry out a contemporary music research outline and Vietnamese experiential film or writing. The Climate of Sound research workshop is concise and informative, with the hope of achieving specific results towards the 4-day workshop at the Hanoi New Music Festival, where we will introduce the articles, research projects, or ethnomusicology films of workshop members.
