Cao Thanh Lan has a strong classical and contemporary music background and Gregor Siedl is a jazz musician with roots in improvised and experimental music. Their common ground is free improvisation with vigorous use of extended techniques and new forms of expression. The duo is actively connected to the thriving music scenes of Vienna, Berlin, Cologne and Brussels. The project with DOMDOM is the follow up of an exciting workshop and concert period in February 2014. The continuation of the Parallel Asteroid and DOMDOM Hanoi is a chance to deepen the artistic connection and expand the cultural exchange between the two ensembles.
In this workshop phase various musical approaches, historical foundations, selected contemporary- and experimental music and their relevance to improvised music. Conceptual improvisation, alternative notation and extended instrumental playing techniques will be introduced to the participants. Through practice sessions making use of conceptual improvisation, group settings of different instrumentation and performance ideas will be formed.
The focus of the workshop will be on instant composition, extended techniques, interactive performance skills, aesthetic viewpoints, socio-cultural considerations and background knowledge on selected influential contemporary composers.
This workshop is especially organized for the advanced improvisation class of Domdom but also open to selected young musicians and composers who are passionate about experimental music and have experience with improvisation and have participated in previous courses/ workshops of Domdom.
